- Microsoft has become a clumsy, uncompetitive innovator. Its products are lampooned, often unfairly but sometimes with good reason.
- While Apple continues to gain market share in many products, Microsoft has lost share in Web browsers, high-end laptops and smartphones. Despite billions in investment, its Xbox line is still at best an equal contender in the game console business. It first ignored and then stumbled in personal music players until that business was locked up by Apple.
- ClearType: Engineers in the Windows group falsely claimed it made the display go haywire when certain colors were used. The head of Office products said it was fuzzy and gave him headaches. The vice president for pocket devices was blunter: he’d support ClearType and use it, but only if I transferred the program and the programmers to his control. As a result, even though it received much public praise, internal promotion and patents, a decade passed before a fully operational version of ClearType finally made it into Windows.
- Internal competition is common at great companies. It can be wisely encouraged to force ideas to compete. The problem comes when the competition becomes uncontrolled and destructive. At Microsoft, it has created a dysfunctional corporate culture in which the big established groups are allowed to prey upon emerging teams, belittle their efforts, compete unfairly against them for resources, and over time hector them out of existence. It’s not an accident that almost all the executives in charge of Microsoft’s music, e-books, phone, online, search and tablet efforts over the past decade have left.

Neki bi rekli "kiselo je grozdje", ali njegove reci previse dobro fituju u ono sto se spolja vidi kao desavanje u MSu. I linux community i OOo polako ali sigurno idu kad tome da pokrivaju potrebe prosecnog korisnika kompjutera bilo kuci bilo u SoHo varijantama sto je direktna pretnja osnovnim profitnim linijama o kojima Dick Brass prica kao kravama muzarama MSa. Hoce li se na kraju MS pretvoriti u novog SCOa, jalovu tvorevinu koja ce se odrzavati u zivotu tuzenjem svega i svakog za zastarele patente i ostali IPO?

Recimo ta prica za windows grupu, ko me poznaje zna da sam ranije pomno pratio sta se desava sa Singularity projektom, iako nije revolucionaran u smislu OS arhitekture (linux ima mikro kernel od vajkada), predstavlja inovaciju u pogledu stabilnosti OSa (poimence Windowsa) naspram njegove programabilnosti, po tadasnjim planovima WM7 i sledeci windows (8+) su trebali da budu singularity based sto bi jednom za svagda resilo gomilu problema pocev od BSoD zbog lose napisanih ring0 drajvera, vec sad je ocigledno da od toga nema nista. Vec godinu i po dana taj projekat je na ledu, nit se nesto radi na njemu, nit se nesto prica, kao da ga nikad nije ni bilo, umesto toga "zakrpljen" je najveci problem uvodjenjem skupe sertifikacije i obaveznog potpisivanja kernel drajvera i teranja svi ostalih na UMDF. A ako iza toga stoji interno-politicko birokratsko saplitanje zato sto se menadzment windows grupe oseca ugorzenim onda to zaista jeste problem za buducnost kompanije i postavlja se pitanje kakve su sve jos invoacije zatrpali patentima koje nikad ne planiraju da implementiraju (a kojima ce jednog dana stecajni upravnici tuziti sve ostale).
